Sonic Fiber vs Xfinity (Comcast)
Both will get you online. They differ on upload speed, how the price changes after the first year, and whether you can get them at your address. Here's the side-by-side, with sources.
Prices and plans change often and vary by address. Check each provider before you order.
The short version
Sonic is the better deal if it's available at your address and you want fast, even speeds. Its fiber plan goes up to 10 Gbps with uploads that match downloads, while Xfinity's cable network is built around fast downloads and much slower uploads.
Xfinity can still make sense if you only need a modest plan, want to bundle mobile or TV, or Sonic hasn't reached your street yet.
Side by side
| Provider | Fastest speed | Intro price / mo | Price after intro / mo | Install fee | Technology | Upload = download? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Xfinity | 1.2 Gbps | $100 | $140 | $100 | Cable | No |

That makes it a marketing source, and it compares top plans rather than entry-level ones. Competitor prices vary by address and change often, so confirm them on each provider's site.
Upload speed is the biggest difference
Sonic's fiber is symmetric: the 10 Gbps plan uploads as fast as it downloads. Sonic's comparison marks Xfinity's cable service as not symmetric.
If you work from home, join video calls, back up photos or send large files, upload speed is what decides how smooth that feels. Downloads are what most people notice first, but uploads are where cable falls furthest behind.
Price: the intro rate and what comes later
Sonic. Sonic's Bay Area pages list $49.99 a month for the intro period and $59.99 after, with no contract and no data cap. In Los Angeles and Dallas, Sonic says pricing starts at $40 a month.
Xfinity. Xfinity now sells some plans with a five-year price guarantee, which narrows the old promo-then-price-hike gap. Third-party trackers put its internet-only plans at roughly $40 to $100 a month depending on speed and address. Equipment fees can differ by plan, with the gateway included on some and rented on others, so read the fine print.
Install, equipment and fees
Sonic includes free installation on every plan. For WiFi you can use your own router or rent Sonic's eero equipment. Sonic's comparison lists a $100 install fee for Xfinity, though promotions can waive it, so check at checkout.
Where Xfinity may still be the better choice
- Availability. Xfinity reaches many more addresses, and Sonic may not be on your street yet.
- Modest needs. If a few hundred Mbps is plenty, Xfinity's entry plans can undercut Sonic's single price.
- Bundles. If you want mobile and TV on one bill with your internet, Xfinity sells those packages.
Switching from Xfinity to Sonic
Sonic says it will pay your remaining contract fee, up to $200, when you switch. Current Xfinity internet plans are generally month-to-month, so many people won't have a fee to cover.
Whichever way you go, keep your old service until Sonic is installed and working. Then cancel, and return any rented equipment.
Questions
Is Sonic cheaper than Xfinity?
For the fastest plan each one sells, yes. In Sonic's September 2026 comparison, Sonic's 10 Gbps plan is $59.99 a month after the intro rate, against $140 for Xfinity's fastest plan. If you only need a few hundred Mbps, Xfinity's entry plans can cost less. Prices vary by address.
Does Sonic have data caps or contracts?
No. Sonic says it doesn't impose data caps on any plan, and its plans have no contracts.
Is Sonic available everywhere Xfinity is?
No. Xfinity covers far more addresses. Sonic builds fiber block by block, so check your exact address on Sonic's site.
What if I'm under contract with my current provider?
Sonic says it will pay your remaining contract fee, up to $200, when you switch. Check the terms on Sonic's contract buyout page before you cancel anything.
What do I get for signing up through your link?
Sonic's referral page advertises the first month free for new customers who sign up through a referral link, and its rules say referred customers get the current new-customer promotions and pricing at the time they sign up. Sonic sets the offer and can change it. The referral only counts if you start from the link, so don't begin the order from sonic.com.
